Le Monastère de Saint-Étienne[2] est situé dans le vieux quartier de la ville de Bañolas, dans la région du Pla de l'Estany. Il peut être considéré comme l'une des premières fondations monastiques bénédictines en Catalogne.
Bien que la date exacte ne soit pas connue, le monastère a été fondé avant 812. Sa création a été réalisée par l'abbé Bonitus qui a obtenu du comte Odilon les droits sur des terrains connus sous le nom de "Baniola" dans le pagus de Besalú. Le premier document écrit dans lequel le monastère de Saint-Étienne est mentionné date de 822 ; dans ce document, l'autorisation du comte Odilon pour effectuer des travaux sur le terrain mentionné précédemment est citée.
