La superficie de la commune est de 616 hectares dont 90 de forêts ; Chavelot est situé sur une colline et son altitude varie de 306 mètres à 355 mètres.
L'agglomération se concentre entre le canal et la voie ferrée, le long de l'ancien tracé de la RN 57. Aujourd'hui, la nationale à 4 voies traverse la commune avec un échangeur au sud du village ouvrant vers l'ouest vosgien. Épinal est à 11 km au sud et Nancy à 64 km au nord.
