Décidée par le roi François Ier, la construction des fortifications de Rocroy a vu le jour sous Henri II à partir de 1555. Rocroy est l'exemple d'une première fortification rasante. Né de l'imagination des ingénieurs militaires italiens, son urbanisme étoilé est unique en France. Vauban interviendra un siècle et demi plus tard pour n'apporter que quelques améliorations et intégrer Rocroy dans son célèbre « pré carré ». Elle a marqué l'histoire notamment lors de la bataille de Rocroi le 19 mai 1643, opposant Français et Espagnols lors de la guerre de Trente Ans.
