Ce monument imposant fut commandé par la famille Vernes pour commémorer le décès de leur fils, Marcel, et de son co-pilote, Jean Peinaud, morts au cours d'un combat aérien à cet endroit en 1917. Partis en mission d'observation sur ce secteur proche de Vailly-sur-Aisne, leur Farman F61 fut abattu et s'écrasa non loin de la ferme de Folemprise...
