La chapelle se situe à l’emplacement d’une abbatiale et d’un couvent fondés au 7ème siècle par Glossinde de Champagne qui est issue d’une famille noble de la Cour d’Austrasie. La chapelle, reconstruite entre 1752 et 1757, et les bâtiments attenants, aujourd’hui siège du diocèse, administration et résidence de l’Évêque de Metz, ne sont qu’occasionnellement ouverts lors des Journées Européennes du Patrimoine.
