La cappella sorge sul sito di una chiesa abbaziale e di un convento fondati nel VII secolo da Glossinde de Champagne, che proveniva da una nobile famiglia della Corte d'Austria. La cappella, ricostruita tra il 1752 e il 1757, e gli edifici adiacenti, oggi sede della diocesi, dell'amministrazione e residenza del vescovo di Metz, sono aperti solo occasionalmente durante le Giornate europee del patrimonio.
