Il est inscrit au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté du 29 octobre 1937. Son parc est un site classé par arrêté du 23 février 1942.Au XIIIe siècle, la châtellenie dépend de Rochecorbon. La famille de Chauvigny la vend à Jean III de Bueil au XIVe siècle. Le château date de la fin du XVe siècle. Jean V de Bueil, comte de Sancerre et amiral de France, et son fils, Antoine de Bueil, épouse Jeanne de France.
