Le culte de la Vierge noire date du VIème siècle alors qu'une colonie syrienne s'était établie dans ce bourg appelé alors Avenum. La primitive église (1170-1180) abrite la statue miraculeuse St Pol. Jeanne d'Arc s'est recueilli devant Notre Dame des Miracles. C'est au cours des guerres de religion que la statue est brûlée tandis que l'église est ruinée(1562). Une nouvelle statue est inaugurée à la fin du XVIème, celle-la même qui est contemplée. Après la Révolution, l'édifice est restauré. L'église est incendiée en 1940 mais rien de la chapelle n'est touchée par le feu. Un nouvel édifice est construit et inauguré en 1966.
