El culto a la Virgen Negra se remonta al siglo VI, cuando se estableció una colonia siria en esta ciudad, entonces llamada Avenum. La iglesia primitiva (1170-1180) alberga la estatua milagrosa de San Pol. Juana de Arco rezó ante la Virgen de los Milagros. Fue durante las Guerras de Religión cuando se quemó la estatua y se arruinó la iglesia (1562). A finales del siglo XVI se inauguró una nueva estatua, la misma que se contempla. Después de la Revolución, el edificio fue restaurado. La iglesia se quemó en 1940, pero nada en la capilla se vio afectado por el fuego. Se construyó un nuevo edificio que se inauguró en 1966.
