A cet endroit passait la chaussée romaine Reims-Trèves, construite en 45 av J-C. sous le règne de l'empereur Claude et au bord de laquelle, les romains avaient installé un relais pour accueillir les soldats et les voyageurs. Ce lieu a fait l'objet de fouilles scientifiques et des panneaux didactiques sont installés pour expliquer aux promeneurs la vie en cet endroit à l'époque romaine.A voir également, à deux pas de Chameleux, le pittoresque village français de Wiliers, établi sur un éperon barré par un mur, sans doute construit à l'époque celtique ou à l'époque romaine.
