L'historien Harry De Paepe raconte qu'il était un temps où il était permis d'entrer gratuitement dans la "Tour de Londres" avec un chien ou un chat, "car on pouvait les donner à manger aux lions". Il y avait autrefois un zoo dans la Tour. L'historien Harry De Paepe : "... la tradition des animaux dans la Tour a en fait commencé au 13e siècle, lorsque le roi d'Angleterre de l'époque a reçu un éléphant en cadeau, parce qu'il ne savait pas quoi faire de cet animal, il a donné un abri à l'animal dans la Tour."
