Higham Ferrers est un bourg traditionnel de la Vallée de la Nene, dans l'est du Northamptonshire, aux confins du Cambridgeshire et du Bedfordshire. Il forme une conurbation avec Rushden au sud, et sa population est d'environ 7150 habitants. Le centre-ville a conservé plusieurs édifices anciens sur la place du Marché et dans College Street.
Place de marché au Moyen Âge, Higham Ferrers doit sa première charte a un seigneur avisé qui en 1251 lui accorda le statut de borough afin de faire de la communauté villageoise qui s'était regroupée aux portes de son château, une petite ville prospère.
