Sa population était de 102 100 habitants en 2008 . La ville est connue comme station thermale depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Le tourisme balnéaire a permis l'essor de Worthing qui ne comptait que 2 500 habitants en 1803.
Les premières traces d'activité humaine dans le centre-ville actuel remonteraient à l'Âge de bronze, selon des fouilles réalisées dans une rue du centre . Pendant l'Âge de fer, un des plus grands châteaux de Grande-Bretagne était situé à Cissbury Ring.
