Le prieuré de la cathédrale de Winchester était un monastère cathédral rattaché à la cathédrale de Winchester, fournissant le clergé pour l'église. Cenwealh, fils de Cynegils, est crédité de la construction de l'Ancien Ministère de Winchester dans les années 640, et un nouvel évêché a été créé dans les années 660 avec Wine comme premier évêque. Bien qu'attaqué par les Vikings en 860 et 879, le monastère a survécu et s'est rétabli.
