Les rapports les plus courants sur l'utilisation de ces colliers provenaient d'Écosse vers les années 1820. Ces colliers étaient conçus pour contrer les voleurs de tombes. Les voleurs de tombes étaient des étudiants en anatomie humaine. Légalement, seuls les corps des criminels exécutés pouvaient être utilisés pour étudier l'anatomie. Mais la demande était plus importante que l'offre.
