L'université de Reading a été fondée en 1892 au cours d'une période de développement rapide de la ville de Reading, en Angleterre. C'est une des Red brick university.
L'université doit ses origines aux écoles d'Art et de Science établies à Reading en 1860 et 1870. En 1892, le College of Reading est fondé, en tant que dépendance de Christ Church, un college de l'université d'Oxford.
