La bataille de Navarin s'est déroulée ici le 20 octobre 1827, durant la guerre d'indépendance grecque (1821-1832), dans la baie de Navarin. Une armada ottomane et égyptienne coalisée fut anéantie par une flotte anglo-française et russe. Elle est remarquable pour être la dernière grande bataille navale de l'histoire à avoir opposé exclusivement des navires à voile. Les navires alliés étaient mieux armés que leurs adversaires égyptiens et ottomans, et leurs équipages étaient mieux entraînés, contribuant ainsi à une victoire totale.
