Dans la bataille des Athéniens contre les Spartiates lors de la guerre du Péloponnèse en 425 av. J.-C., les Spartiates étaient basés sur Sphactérie. Les Athéniens ont débarqué sur l'île et ont massacré les Spartiates. 292 Spartiates ont survécu et se sont rendus. Ils ont pu défendre l'île pendant 72 jours.
Des siècles plus tard, lors de la guerre d'indépendance en 1825, 350 Grecs ont été tués ici sur Sphactérie lors de l'un des plus grands massacres de cette guerre.
