In de slag tussen de Atheners en de Spartanen in de Peloponnesische Oorlog in 425 v.Chr. hadden de Spartanen zich gestationeerd op Sphacteria. De Atheners landden op het eiland en slachtten de Spartanen af. 292 Spartanen overleefden en gaven zich over. Ze konden het eiland 72 dagen verdedigen.
Eeuwen later, tijdens de Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog in 1825, werden hier op Sphacteria 350 Grieken vermoord tijdens een van de grootste slachtingen van die oorlog.
