Argos est une ville d'Argolide dans le Péloponnèse, située près de Nauplie. Son nom viendrait de la racine grecque arg-, qui signifie « quelque chose de brillant » . Située au pied de deux acropoles remontant à l'Antiquité , elle est aujourd'hui un centre agricole .
Argos dépend pour son alimentation en eau des très nombreux puits qui se trouvent dans la plaine argolide, appelés matia et dont on attribue la création aux Danaïdes. Depuis 1954, les eaux de l'Erasinos approvisionnent la ville et en 1972, les eaux de l'Amymoni sont venues s'y joindre.
