Le stoïcisme est une école de philosophie hellénistique qui a prospéré dans le monde romain et grec jusqu'au 3ème siècle après J.-C. Il est lié au mot stoa ou colonne. Il y avait une colonnade du côté nord de l'Agora d'Athènes, où le fondateur de la Stoa, Zénon de Cition (Chypre, 334-264 av. J.-C.), a dispensé son enseignement.
