C'est une station sur la ligne interurbaine Dublin à Waterford et a été nommée MacDonagh le 10 avril 1966 en commémoration de Thomas MacDonagh, l'un des chefs exécutés du soulèvement de Pâques de 1916.
Elle se trouve sur une courte voie en cul-de-sac à partir de la ligne de chemin de fer principale, à une distance d'environ 4,5 km de la ligne Lavistown Loop. Cela nécessite que les trains sortent de la station dans la même direction que celle par laquelle ils sont entrés. Cela signifiait déplacer la locomotive d'une extrémité du train à l'autre. Aujourd'hui, l'utilisation des autorails de classe IE 22000 a éliminé le besoin de cette procédure.
