Après avoir perdu le concours pour concevoir les portes du Baptistère, Filippo Brunelleschi partit en voyage d'études. Il mesurait et étudiait des choses partout. Il visita notamment le Panthéon à Rome et fut fasciné par le dôme. C'était le plus grand dôme du monde antique. C'est là qu'il trouva l'inspiration pour placer un tel dôme sur l'église Santa Maria del Fiore, qui était restée pendant des siècles sans couverture.
