Spolète est une ville d'environ 40 000 habitants située dans la province de Pérouse en Ombrie, dans le centre de l'Italie.
Spolète est située à l’extrémité méridionale della Valle Umbra, une vaste plaine alluviale, elle-même générée par la présence préhistorique d'un vaste lac, Umber. Le lac a été asséché durant l'ère médiévale pour obtenir des terres fertiles, propices à l'agriculture.
