Le Mont des Fignes, 1172 m, se situe sur le versant padan de l'Apennin ligure, juste au nord de la ligne de partage des eaux ligure-padane. Le sommet, traversé par la frontière administrative entre les provinces de Gênes et d'Alessandria, est le point culminant de cette zone.
Le nom de la montagne dérive probablement du terme latin fines ; en effet, la frontière entre la marque obertenga et celle alémanique passait par la montagne.
