La Piazza XX Settembre est à la hauteur du Ponte di Mezzo et surplombe la Piazza Garibaldi de l'autre côté du fleuve.
À gauche de la Piazza XX Settembre (dosée à la Logge di Banchi) se trouve le Palazzo Gambacorti (siège de la municipalité): un bel édifice gothique pisan avec une double rangée de fenêtres à double lancette et des inscriptions et des armoiries ornant la façade.
Le bâtiment est aujourd'hui le siège de la municipalité, c'est pourquoi la place est appelée Piazza del Comune par les Pisans.
L'atrium de la place mène à la cour, avec des colonnes à chapiteaux du XVe siècle et des murs décorés d'armoiries des conseils des magistrats.
Sur la gauche se trouve la tour avec l'horloge du Palazzo Pretorio où se trouve maintenant la bibliothèque municipale.
