Le comte Ansfried a fondé l'abbaye de Thorn en 985. Dix ans plus tard, il devint évêque d'Utrecht. La partie la plus ancienne de l'église actuelle date du 12ème siècle. La remarquable superstructure rayée du clocher a été réalisée par l'architecte Cuypers, qui a également reconstruit de nombreuses autres églises dans cette région au 19ème siècle. On remarquera également l'autel baroque monumental de 1769, œuvre de Franz Xaver Bader. Il était à l'origine destiné au monastère chartreux de Roermond.
