Abdijkerk van Thorn

Description

Graaf Ansfried stichtte in 985 de abdij van Thorn. Hij werd 10 jaar later bisschop van Utrecht. Het oudste deel van de huidige kerk dateert van de 12de eeuw. De opvallende gestreepte bovenbouw van de toren werd aangebracht door architect Cuypers die ook tal van andere kerken herbouwde in deze streek, in de 19de eeuw. Opvallend is ook hat barokke hoogaltaar uit 1769 van de hand van Franz Xaver Bader. Het was oorspronkelijk bedoeld voor het kartuizerklooster van Roermond.
