La Achterhoek se trouve littéralement comme un coin à la frontière avec l'Allemagne. C'est un paysage typique de sable recouvert. Ici, vous trouverez l'une des plus anciennes roches des Pays-Bas dans la carrière de Winterswijk. Un dépôt de calcaire a été autrefois déposé dans une mer tropicale, mieux connu sous le nom de Muschelkalk. Et vous y trouverez également des empreintes fossiles de pattes de lézards. C'est maintenant une couche de pierre dure utilisée comme matériau de construction dans cette région et au-delà.
