Die Achterhoek liegt buchstäblich als eine Ecke an der Grenze zu Deutschland. Es ist eine typische Decksandlandschaft. Hier finden Sie eines der ältesten Gesteine der Niederlande im Steinbruch bei Winterswijk. Hier wurde eine Kalkablagerung in einem tropischen Meer einst abgelagert, besser bekannt als der Muschelkalk. Und man findet dort auch fossile Fußabdrücke von Sauriern. Es ist jetzt eine harte Gesteinsschicht, die als Baumaterial in dieser Region und weit darüber hinaus verwendet wird.
