Le 1er novembre 1570, la côte néerlandaise et flamande est frappée par une énorme inondation connue sous le nom de Flot de la Toussaint. De nombreuses villes ont été touchées, comme Egmond, Bergen op Zoom et Saeftinghe. Mais certains villages ont même été complètement engloutis et sont appelés les villages noyés (Avenkerke sur l'île de Wulpen, Cornsant sur l'île de Bosch dans la mer des Wadden, Klaaskinderkerke à Schouwen-Duiveland, Koezand à l'embouchure de l'Escaut occidental, Moggershil à l'ouest de Tholen, Westende sur l'île de Wulpen).
