La Holterberg est une région vallonnée, qui fait partie du Parc national de Sallandse Heuvelrug. La Holterberg doit son nom au village d'Holten dans la province d'Overijssel, qui est situé au sud de cette région. Au nord, cette zone est limitrophe de la Haarlerberg et de la Noetselerberg. Cette zone naturelle comprend de nombreux champs de bruyère alternant avec des forêts. Seules la Holterberg et la Haute Veluwe abritent en Hollande des tétras.
