André Hazes est né le 30 juin 1951 dans la rue Gerard Dou au numéro 67, au cœur de De Pijp. On raconte qu'enfant, on lui demandait de venir chanter des chansons dans le café en face de la maison de ses parents. À cet endroit se trouve maintenant l'Eddy Bar. Hazes a été découvert en 1959 par Johnny Kraaijkamp alors qu'il chantait sur l'Albert Cuyp. Plus tard, il a occupé divers emplois, y compris celui de serveur, et était connu comme le barman chanteur.
Sa percée est survenue en 1976 avec le titre 'Eenzame kerst'. Au total, il a sorti plus de 300 chansons sur 36 albums différents. Le chanteur a acquis un statut culte aux Pays-Bas grâce au film 'Zij gelooft in mij' sorti en 2000.
