André Hazes blev født den 30. juni 1951 i Gerard Doustraat nummer 67, midt i De Pijp. Det er velkendt, at han som lille dreng blev bedt om at komme ind i baren overfor sit barndomshjem for at synge sange. På den plads ligger nu Eddy Bar. Hazes blev opdaget i 1959 af Johnny Kraaijkamp, da han stod og sang på Albert Cuyp. Senere havde han forskellige jobs, herunder som tjener, og han blev kendt som den syngende bartender.
Hans gennembrud kom i 1976 med nummeret 'Ensomme jul'. I alt udgav han mere end 300 numre på 36 forskellige albums. Sangeren opnåede i Holland en kultagtig status gennem filmen 'Hun tror på mig' fra 2000.
