L'église fait partie du Top 100 des monuments néerlandais de l'UNESCO.
La Grande ou Sint-Bavokerk est la plus grande église de Haarlem, située sur la Grote Markt. Elle est dédiée à Saint-Bavo. L'église médiévale à croix (période de construction : 1370-1520) qui se trouve au cœur de la vieille ville est construite dans le style architectural gothique.
Au sommet du bâtiment de l'église se trouve un transept de plus de 75 mètres de haut, en bois et couvert de plomb, de style gothique tardif.
L'église a été initialement construite comme une église catholique. En 1559, l'église est devenue la cathédrale du nouveau diocèse de Haarlem, jusqu'à ce qu'elle devienne une maison de prière protestante après la Réforme.
