Après que, dans les années 80 du XVIe siècle, presque toute la Flandre (à l'exception d'Ostende, Biervliet, Terneuzen et Axel) a été reconquise par le chef militaire espagnol Alexandre Farnèse (duc de Parme à partir de 1586), les Espagnols ont construit des forteresses à des endroits stratégiques pour se défendre contre les incursions des rebelles du nord. L'un de ces lieux était l'embouchure de l'ancien port d'Oostburg. Lorsque le prince Maurice a débarqué en 1604 avec une grande armée d'invasion dans le Pays de Cadzand, le fort espagnol à cet endroit est rapidement tombé aux mains des États.
