Nachdem gegen Ende der 80er Jahre des 16. Jahrhunderts fast ganz Flandern (außer Oostende, Biervliet, Terneuzen und Axel) von dem spanischen Feldherrn Alexander Farnese (ab 1586 Herzog von Parma) zurückerobert worden war, errichteten die Spanier an strategischen Orten Festungen zur Verteidigung gegen Überfälle von Aufständischen aus dem Norden. Einer dieser Orte war die Mündung des alten Hafens von Oostburg. Als Prinz Maurits 1604 mit einer großen Invasionsarmee im Land von Cadzand landete, fiel die spanische Festung an diesem Ort schnell in die Hände der Stände.
