Au fil des siècles, la zone 'Gat van den Ham' a subi des changements dus à la nature et à l'homme. Le système de cours d'eau actuel est un vestige des polders du 16e siècle. Afin d'améliorer la nature, l'agriculture, la gestion des eaux et l'histoire culturelle, des changements importants ont été apportés ces dernières années, comme la création de nouvelles zones naturelles et de zones humides autour des cours d'eau. De plus, des parcelles de terre agricoles ont été intégrées à la forêt.
