Door de eeuwen heen is het gebied 'Gat van den Ham' onderhevig geweest aan veranderingen door natuur en mens. Het huidige krekenstelsel is een restant van inpoldering in de 16e eeuw. Om natuur, landbouw, waterberging en cultuurhistorie te beteren is in de afgelopen jaren het nodige veranderd, zoals de realisatie van nieuwe natuur en drassige gebieden rondom de kreken. Daarnaast zijn stukken agrarische grond bij het bos getrokken.
