La sculpture originale en pierre naturelle était une initiative de Peter de Lijser. Elle a été offerte par lui et l'Association des Propriétaires de l'immeuble Residence De Sluuswachter à la commune d'Oostburg à l'époque. L'exemplaire actuel en bronze a été réalisé pour le compte de la commune d'Oostburg.
La sculpture a été inaugurée le 21 novembre 1987 par le maire adjoint d'Oostburg, J.P.S.A. Thomaes, après l'ouverture de la Residence De Sluuswachter. Cependant, dans la nuit du 28 au 29 juillet 1994, la sculpture a été arrachée de son socle avec violence et a été endommagée irrémédiablement. La sculpture de remplacement actuelle a été inaugurée le 20 décembre 2000 par l'échevin R. Leentfaar.
