La escultura original, hecha de piedra natural, fue una iniciativa de Peter de Lijser. Fue donada por él y la Asociación de Propietarios del complejo de apartamentos Residence De Sluuswachter al entonces municipio de Oostburg. La actual, en bronce, fue creada por encargo del municipio de Oostburg.
La escultura fue inaugurada el 21 de noviembre de 1987 por el teniente de alcalde de Oostburg, J.P.S.A. Thomaes, tras la apertura de Residence De Sluuswachter. Sin embargo, en la noche del 28 al 29 de julio de 1994, la escultura fue arrancada de su pedestal con violencia y sufrió daños irreparables. La actual escultura de reemplazo fue inaugurada el 20 de diciembre de 2000 por el concejal R. Leentfaar.
