Vers 1590 se trouvait ici le camp militaire espagnol Roma, nommé d'après un commandant militaire. Deux cents hommes y étaient logés. En 1637, le retranchement fut aménagé dans sa forme actuelle pour protéger la navigation sur la Mark. En 1680, le retranchement tomba en désuétude, mais fut restauré en 1830 et remis en service, maintenant comme bastion contre les Belges, en raison de la guerre d'indépendance belge. Ainsi, le retranchement prit sa forme actuelle.
