Omkring 1590 lå det spanske lejr Rom, opkaldt efter en hærfører, her. Der var 200 soldater indkvarteret. I 1637 blev skansen anlagt i sin nuværende form for at beskytte skibstrafikken på Mark. I 1680 blev skansen ubenyttet, for at blive genoprettet i 1830 og taget i brug, nu som bastion mod belgierne på grund af den belgiske separatistkrig. Således opstod skansen i sin nuværende form.
