Le lieu est situé juste au sud du village de Den Hoorn. Il a légèrement augmenté depuis le déplacement de l'embarcadère de TESO en 1962.
Deux instituts scientifiques nationaux sont établis dans la localité. Bien visible depuis le ferry, le NIOZ, l'Institut royal néerlandais de recherche marine. Un peu plus loin se trouve une annexe de l'institut de recherche Wageningen Alterra.
