De plaats ligt net ten zuiden van het dorp Den Hoorn. De plaats is sinds het verplaatsen van de aanlegsteiger van TESO in 1962 iets gegroeid.
Er zijn in de plaats twee nationale wetenschappelijke instituten gevestigd. Duidelijk zichtbaar vanaf de veerboot is het NIOZ, het Koninklijke Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee. Even verderop ligt een dependance van het Wageningse onderzoeksinstituut Alterra .
