La ville blanche de Thorn est connue pour ses bâtiments peints en blanc et ses ruelles étroites, qui datent de différentes époques de l'histoire néerlandaise.
L'histoire de Thorn s'étend sur plus de mille ans. Thorn a été un État autonome pendant plus de 800 ans, où des dames de chapitre, sous la direction d'une princesse-abesse, exerçaient le pouvoir. Ces dames de chapitre étaient en réalité des dames nobles de couvent.
Cette petite principauté avait son propre système judiciaire et frappait sa propre monnaie. Avec l'arrivée des Français en 1794, cela prit fin. Les Français instaurèrent un impôt basé sur la taille des fenêtres. Plus il y avait de fenêtres dans la maison, plus l'impôt était élevé. La population pauvre bouchait les fenêtres pour limiter l'imposition. Pour cacher les « cicatrices de la pauvreté », les maisons étaient blanchies.
