La cittadina bianca di Thorn è conosciuta per i suoi caratteristici edifici dipinti di bianco e le sue strette stradine, che risalgono a diversi periodi della storia olandese.
La storia di Thorn si estende per più di mille anni. Thorn è stata per oltre 800 anni un piccolo stato indipendente dove le dame di chiesa, sotto la guida di una principessa-abate, regnavano. Queste dame di chiesa erano in realtà nobildonne monastiche.
Questo stato aveva un proprio sistema giuridico e coniava la propria moneta. Con l'arrivo dei francesi nel 1794, tutto ciò ebbe una fine. I francesi introdussero una tassa basata sulla dimensione delle finestre. Maggiore era il numero delle finestre in casa, maggiore era la tassa. La povera popolazione murò le finestre per limitare l'imposizione fiscale. Per nascondere le "cicatrici della povertà", le case venivano imbiancate.
