Les plus anciens vestiges de l'église ont été découverts lors de recherches en 1948. Il s'agissait de trous de poteaux, qui ont probablement été créés en même temps que l'établissement d'un cimetière. On suppose qu'il y avait déjà, avant 1000, une petite église en bois à trois nefs sans tour. Cette église a été suivie, après un incendie, par une petite église en pierre sur un fondement de cailloux avec une lourde tour côté ouest.
