Le più antiche resti della chiesa furono trovati durante ricerche nel 1948. Si trattava di fori di palo, che potrebbero essere stati creati contemporaneamente alla fondazione di un cimitero. Si sospetta che già prima dell'anno 1000 qui ci fosse una chiesa in legno a tre navate senza torre. Questa chiesa è stata seguita, dopo un incendio, da una chiesetta in pietra su un fondamento di ciottoli con una pesante torre sul lato ovest.
