Gáfete est, avec 856 habitants, la plus grande localité du district après Crato. Le territoire de la commune de Gáfete abrite l'une des plus grandes carrières de granit de l'Alto Alentejo. Ce qui est particulièrement intéressant ici, c'est l'exportation massive de monuments funéraires japonais. On y produit également le célèbre et très populaire fromage de chèvre Maia.
